I WAS WRONG

I honestly thought things would be different.
All year I have been hearing the same story from various sports outlets. It has become so cliché throughout the NBA season that I touched on it in my first article and have continued to hear this point discussed everywhere from ESPN to Fox Sports to local talk shows. Last time I wrote to you, I discussed how the NBA having two “super-teams” was making the NBA regular season and the NBA playoffs predictable and uninteresting. The one solace I took with this fact was that we were going to see an NBA finals between two all-time great teams. The epic 3rd straight confrontation between one of the best players in history against a team with the single season record for wins that added a top 5 player. If the NBA playoffs were not going to be competitive, at least the finals would be great.
How wrong we were.
Talks of an epic series have faded as the Warriors are on the verge of sweeping an NBA finals against a team that lost one game during the first three rounds of the playoffs. I discussed previously how the Boston Celtics winning one game in the Eastern Conference Finals was not enough to make the NBA playoffs compelling, but at least the Boston Celtics WITHOUT their best player beat the defending NBA champions once in a series, while those same defending champions are now looking like they will be preparing to go on offseason vacation this time tomorrow.         

I starting writing an article before the series started titled “Goliath vs Goliath” about how both of these teams were the best in the NBA, and that these two teams who are on different levels from their conferences competition were going to put on  a masterful and entertaining series to make up for the non-competitive playoffs. I decided to watch a few games before I commented, and I am happy that I did because my thoughts could not have been more wrong.

Before this series, we were expecting numerous finals between the Warriors and the Cavaliers in the coming years. Now, talks of LeBron James heading to either of the LA teams in the next two years have become prominent rumors. Before this series, many feared Kevin Durant would shrink under the bright lights like he did in the 2016 Western Conference Finals. Now, the media is claiming that the torch is being passed from LeBron James to Kevin Durant. Even Stephen Curry has somewhat made up from his horrible finals performance last year by becoming the perfect 1A to Kevin Durant.

We thought heading into this series the finals would be a battle between two great Goliaths, but it turns out that some Goliaths are bigger than others.
