With the playoff seeding set for Westfield and Augusta Prep, there was nothing to gain for either team heading into Friday night’s matchup. Well, as would be expected, the play kind of showed exactly that. Both teams showed some rust throughout the night with turnovers, but in the end the Hornets were able to pull away to a 28-0 victory.
Oddly enough, the game began with a spark as the opening kickoff was returned deep into Westfield territory from the Augusta Prep return man. The Cavaliers looked primed to score on the Hornets, but a lob pass over the middle was intercepted by Giles Amos. The interception was a harbinger of things to come for Augusta Prep, as they continually turned the ball over after putting together impressive drives.
The Hornets would also have problems with turnovers as QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was picked off twice. Fortunately for Westfield though, they still had enough firepower to overcome their mistakes and ran up 28 unanswered points. RBs Reagan Waller and Josh Jenkins had great games on the ground, while Giles Amos and Gavin Edmondson put up impressive efforts in the receiving game. In fact, the highlight of the night came when Edmondson made a catch, split two tacklers, and stiff armed another on his way to a 66 yard TD reception.
The win for Westfield marked their eighth in a row, and closed their regular season record at 9-1. Now that the regular season has concluded, Westfield will open round one of the playoffs against Trinity Christian-Dublin on Friday night. Tune into the Spherion Pregame Show at 7:10pm, followed by the Grillmaster BBQ kickoff at 7:30pm only at midgasports.net.
