On paper there wasn’t much to play for on Friday night. Win or lose, Westfield could still clinch the #1 seed in Region 4 with a JMA win over Augusta Prep (which they did). The Hornets didn’t allow that to slow them down however, as they put together an offensive onslaught to the tune of 72-20 over the Flint River Wildcats. The senior class led the way while the youngsters also put together an impressive 4th quarter to ice the win for the Hornets.
The game started with Westfield showing their championship prowess as they jumped out to a 35-0 over Flint River. A mixture of great running from Reagan Waller, Austin Burnette, and Josh Jenkins to go along with Ryan Fitzpatrick throwing the football to Gavin Edmondson and Giles Amos was just too much for the overmatched Wildcats. To their credit, Flint River never gave up and put together a great run in the 3rd quarter behind the dominating play from Brett Williamson. In the end though, it just wasn’t enough. The Hornets put in their young guys in the 4th quarter, and they showed Westfield fans a glimpse into the future. Garan Daw, Hatch Brannen, and Gage Locke are just a few of the names that put on a show for the second unit Friday night. The young Hornets pushed their team all the way past the 70 point barrier on their way to a dominating 72-20 victory.
With their victory, Westfield has now won 7 straight games and stand at 8-1 overall. The Hornets are the Region 4 champions for another year, and will force the championship to come through Perry. Before that though, they will next head on the road to close out the regular season against the August Prep Cavaliers. Tune into the Spherion Pregame Show at 7:10pm, followed by the Grillmaster BBQ kickoff at 7:30pm only at midgasports.net.
