For most of the central Georgia teams this past weekend was business as usual. It seems as if Football season just commenced and in the blink of an eye we are already approaching the home stretch. Most teams are in the thick of their region schedule, attempting to jockey for playoff positioning. Other teams are trying to play their way into the top 4 teams in their region just to get a shot at the state playoffs.
Homecoming was pure domination for the Hornets as they completely dismantled a Westminster of Augusta team who many people, including myself, assumed would be a stiffer challenge than last season. After playing down to Bulloch academy in the Fourth Quarter the previous week, the Hornets left no doubt in this one winning 54-12. Westfield scored 41 points in the 2nd quarter and in the process turned the lights out on the Wildcats.
They Beat Bye!
The Knights took a huge step towards a region championship on Friday defeating Brookwood 27-16. The Knights should be 7-2 when they end the season hosting Valwood for what should be the Region 3 championship game.
The offensive machine that is the Houston County Bears continues to output points at a frantic pace. They are more balanced this year, which is extremely scary for the rest of the State. We all know about Jake Fromm but Chris Brinson has really splashed onto the scene this season as a potent ground threat. The Bears took care of Crosscreek on the road 44-12 and will rest up this week before a trip to Jones County on the 16th of October.
Survive and advance. That is exactly what Warner Robins was able to do Friday against Evans winning 21-19. With an off week to prepare the Demons set their sights on dethroning reigning Region 2-AAAAA Champs Northside on the 16th of October.
The Champs keep on winning. Richmond Academy was no match for the mighty Eagles as Northside rolled to victory 33-7. An off week will allow time for the Eagles to rest up before the City Championship on the 16th October. Win that game and all signs point to the huge showdown with HOCO to end the regular season.
The Greyhounds may be the 3rd best team in the state. And they may have to take to the road again this season in the playoffs because of that. They won again Friday night 38-7 over Lakeside and look to improve playoff seeding against Hoco in Gray on 16 October.
Region 2-AAAAA in GHSA is shaping up the exact way we thought it would. Warner Robins, Jones County, Houston County and Northside all should make the playoffs. It is still to be determined on the seeding. For Westfield all signs point to October 16th vs. John Milledge. A win there means another region championship and at minimum hosting the first two rounds of the playoffs. Buckle your seat belt for an exciting ride to the finish of the regular season!
