Uh oh… The rest of the state better watch out because the Westfield Hornets are rounding into playoff form as they near the home stretch of their regular season schedule. Westfield put together their most complete game yet in a 35-0 victory over the Gatewood Gators Friday night in Eatonton. A pair of TD catches for Giles Amos, great running from Josh Jenkins, and a solid defense with a score of their own showed the recipe for success for these 2015 Hornets. If Friday was a sign of Westfield starting to get rolling, it could be a scary sight for the rest of GISA AAA.
The biggest blow to the Gators Friday night was dealt actually the week before. With their star running Palmer Clark out of the lineup with a hurt ankle, it was set up for being a long night for Gatewood. Well, it turned out just to be that. On Westfield’s first drive, Josh Jenkins took a handoff and rumbled straight into a big pile. It looked as if Josh had been stopped after a short 5 yard gain. Well, just then, somehow Josh squirted out of the pile and was off to the races. The run went all the way down inside Gatewood’s 10 yard line, and was capped off with a Ryan Fitzpatrick 4 yard touchdown run.
The run by Josh Jenkins served as a symbol of what was to come the rest of the night. Gatewood battled hard and never quit, but Westfield always seemed to have an answer. The Hornets added an offensive touchdown in each of the 4 quarters, and also had an interception return for a touchdown by Reagan Waller to complete the scoring. Strong running, great passing, and excellent defense were all in display as the Hornets improved to 2-0 in the region, 6-1 overall.
Westfield will now look forward to their next game this Friday night with the John Milledge Academy Trojans. The game is highly anticipated, and will most likely serve as the Region 4 Championship game. If Westfield wins, they will most likely be at home throughout the playoffs where they obviously boast an extreme homefield advantage.
