Westfield used a strong second quarter in which they scored 41 points to propel them past the Westminster Wildcats on homecoming night at the Hornets Nest. The homecoming king himself, Josh Jenkins, had a big night as he only needed 6 carries to score 3 touchdowns and rack up over 100 yards on the ground. The win was the first in region play for Westfield as they look for yet another region championship.
Judging by a low scoring first quarter, with the Hornets only leading 7-0, no one could have predicted the fireworks that were set to take place. Within a six minute span from the beginning of the second quarter, Westfield rolled up 34 points to the Wildcats’ 6 points. Josh Jenkins did most of the damage with 3 touchdown runs of 14, 48, and 30 yards. Hornet QB Ryan Fitzpatrick also added a TD on the ground from 17 yards out to go along with a beautifully thrown 41 yard TD pass to Giles Amos. The Hornets left little doubt at halftime with a 48-6 halftime score, and allowed their fans and alumni to enjoy the homecoming festivities with little worry.
The second half consisted of a running clock and saw both teams match a score apiece with Westfield on their way to a 54-12 final score. The win is the 5th of the year for the Hornets, and their first in region play. They will now go on the road yet again as they head to Eatonton to take on the Gatewood Gators this Friday night.
