The game was billed as a heavyweight battle between two of the top schools in all of GISA, and for three quarters it was just that. The Westfield Hornets led the Valwood Valiants 28-27 heading into the fourth quarter before a big fourth quarter by Valwood led the Valiants to a 55-28 victory.
Both teams went back and forth with big plays in the first half as they matched each other score for score. The Hornets battled back after trailing 7-0 to take a 14-7 lead before seeing that lead evaporate. The home team from Hahira came back and scored 13 unanswered points to lead at the half 20-14.
The third quarter was more of the same as the two teams started to establish their offensive dominance. Westfield opened the second half with a long sustained drive that gave the Hornets the lead by one point, 21-20. Just that quickly though, Valwood would score, then Westfield, then Valwood... you get the picture. When the third quarter was finally done, it was 28-27 Westfield leading.
While the first three quarters were the same, you couldn't have been more different in the fourth quarter. The fatigue of Westfield's defense was clearly evident as they saw the Valiants put up 28 unanswered points to claim a 55-27 victory over the two time defending state champion Hornets.
The Hornets will look to get back on the right track this Friday at home against the Trinity Christian- Sharpsburg Lions. The Spherion Pregame Show starts at 7:10pm, followed by the Grillmaster BBQ kickoff at 7:30pm. All this and more is available at midgasports.net.
