It's here! Football! That time of year that has every sports fan salivating in anticipation for their teams renewed opportunity to win. Who actually will win is a different question entirely. Right now High School teams have begun to fill out the depth charts and finalize game plans heading into week 1. College and Pro teams are in the middle of preseason camp. So the smell of pigskin and freshly mowed ball fields is definitely predominate these days.
In GISA we can expect much of the same this season. Westfield, Valwood, Deerfield, Pinewood, John Milledge and Brookwood will all be front runners in the race to crown a champion. The huge storyline coming into the season is can Westfield make it a lucky 3 and win the State Championship for a third consecutive season. Who will challenge them? Most think only a few. This man's opinion, Deerfield-Windsor will ultimately be the hurdle in the way of a Hornet 3peat at Mercer.
Moving to Region 2-AAAAA in GHSA. Is this the year Houston County finally takes down Northside? So close last season and with so many weapons returning the Bears may be more concerned with ring sizes at the end of the season but beating Northside would provide huge momentum. Can Northside replace Willie Jordan. Probably. But in a slightly different manner than you think. Tobias Oliver should play the primary ball carrier role from the QB position this season and should loosen things up for those stepping into Jordan's huge shoes at RB.
Can Veterans improve in Logan Byrd's final season as a Warhawk? Will Perry return to winning football under a new staff? You see all of these questions loom large around the mid state pointing to the fact that Football is back! This time of year is incredible. So much football and so many questions to be answered. Every team is filled with an optimistic hope as they prepare for their first game of the year. Everyone is fresh, looking for a fast start to the season.
Everywhere you look in our region of the state you can find quality play. In GISA and GHSA. Throw in Mercer at the College level, and you should have no problem finding a great game to take in on a Friday or Saturday night. Enjoy it while it is here because the 7 months spent waiting on it again will be here before you know it so be sure to take in as many games as you can. And hopefully Middle Georgia will boast multiple champions again this season!
