No argument in AAAAA, region 2-AAAAA was without a doubt the best region in the state of Georgia for AAAAA in 2014. Jones County, Houston County and, the eventual State Champions, Northside all made the Quarterfinals. Jones County had two basically Hail Mary’s at the end of each half go against them or they would have made the semifinals. Houston County was the better team up in Stockbridge but had the weirdest punt of all time go against them as they were up big in the first half and about to get the ball back. But the Northside Eagles capitalized on opponent’s mistakes and used an outstanding rushing attack on their way to a third State Championship.
So region 2-AAAAA, what do you have for us in 2015? More of the same? I think so! The three Houston County schools will be primed to make a return trip to the playoffs with Jones County rounding out the playoff group from the State’s strongest region. The Augusta Schools will have tons of work in order to break into the playoff mix come November. My prediction: 1. Houston County 2. Northside 3. Jones County 4. Warner Robins.
4. Warner Robins:
Make no mistake about it Bryan Way has talent at Warner Robins and he is the caliber of coach that will get everything from that talent. The problem is the schedule. Houston County, Northside and Jones County. To move up the region standings this season Coach Way’s Demons will have to find a win against one of those teams and then hold serve against the Augusta schools. All three of those games will be “Rivalry” type games but none is bigger than the “Game” every year in the International City. The October 16 matchup between the Eagles and Demons is normally a toss-up. Throw out the records coming into it, and as Warner Robins proved last season, there is no telling who will win that game. If Warner Robins can grow with each game their matchup with Jones County at the end of the regular season could determine a 3 or 4 seed for the Demons.
3. Jones County:
The Greyhounds proved they belonged last season as they took down the eventual State Champs, the Northside Eagles. Jones County has tons of talent returning and a coaching staff that seems to be building a real program instead of a one hit wonder. They received a dose of their own medicine from Hoco last season but they get the air powered Bears in Gray this season instead of at the MAC. They do travel to Warner Robins to face the defending State Champions, the Northside Eagles. Both of those games will determine if Jones County can host in the playoffs this season or if they are relegated to another postseason of being road warriors.
At Northside they reload instead of rebuild. They have lost a ton in RB Willie Jordan and Offensive Tackle Brandon Sandifer. But with Tobias Oliver returning to guide the ground attack the Eagles will be soaring in 2015 yet again. They will always have speed in multiple skill positions as well as an attacking defense. I look to see the Eagles excel in the special teams game this season, using their speed to win the field position battle to pickup easy scores. They must shore up the defensive backfield which has plagued them against teams that can throw the ball deep. Look for another 10 win season from the Eagles and another deep playoff run.
1. Houston County
Five quick words describe the 2015 Houston County Bears. Jake Fromm, Darion Anderson, Explosive. Throw in Jaylen Searcy and the offensive genius of the Bears’ play calling and formation, and this year’s Houston County Bears will provide even more explosions this season. The beauty of the Bears’ season is the number of returners on defense. If that defense can improve by giving up around 5 less points a game, Hoco should be in Atlanta come the final game of the season. Talent is there and this is the season they learn how to win against Northside. If they win that game Hoco can ride momentum to a State Championship. I truly believe they are that talented of a football team. Now all they have to do is prove it!
Region 2-AAAAA might end up being the most exciting in any classification of GHSA football this year. The above are my predictions for who makes it out of this awesome region but as we all know anything can happen in the game of football! But it sure is fun to make predictions because that means kicking off the pigskin is just around the corner!
