A safety on the opening kickoff? Yep, that pretty much summed things up for Augusta Prep on Friday night. The Westfield Hornets turned the Cavaliers’ mistakes into a 37-7 first quarter lead, and never looked back as they cruised to a 44-17 victory to close out the regular season.
In one of the oddest beginnings to a game I have ever seen, Augusta Prep took a knee in the endzone for a safety after having the ball bounce off their return man’s foot at the 2 yard line. The Hornets were up 2-0 before anyone even realized what had happened. Then, after the ensuing free kick, Westfield scored on a 30 yard TD pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Reagan Waller. So, within a mere 20 seconds, Westfield was leading 9-0.
The game looked to be well on its way to a blowout when Augusta Prep surprised everyone again. After being forced into a third down and long, quarterback BJ Stone found a receiver for a 75 yard TD reception to cut the lead to 9-7. Maybe this wasn’t going to be a blowout after all?
Well, Westfield quickly got rid of that idea pretty quickly. The Hornets added quick touchdowns from Tanner Westbrook and Giles Amos to blow the game open. They also added interceptions from Gavin Edmondson and Giles Amos to set up two more Westfield touchdowns, building their lead to 37-7 after the 1st quarter. The score would stay that way at halftime.
The second half was a running clock, and actually saw the Augusta Prep Cavaliers outscore the Hornets 10-7. Augusta Prep added a touchdown and a field goal as time expired to make the final score 44-17. Overall, it was a dominating performance from Westfield. The Hornets 44 points gave them a total of 434 for the season. It was the first time in Westfield history they have surpassed the 400 point barrier.
Now that the regular season has concluded, Westfield will open round one of the playoffs against Dominion Christian on Friday night. Tune into the Brannen Outfitters Pregame Show at 7:10pm, followed by kickoff at 7:30pm only at midgasports.net.
