First thing’s first, I want to let it be known that I have a great respect for the Deerfield Windsor program. Coach Lowe is one of the finest coaches in the state and what he has done in Albany is nothing short of amazing. The Knights have a great football team with great football players and are a safe bet to win each and every time they step on the field. I wish the folks from Albany nothing but the best… except when they face Westfield.
The purpose of this piece is not to brag on Deerfield Windsor however, my point is to light a fire under the Hornets and all of their supporters. In the two years that I have followed Westfield athletics, I have come to realize that the Knights are in the heads of the Hornets. It doesn’t seem to matter what sport it is, Westfield looks defeated before the kickoff, opening tip, first pitch, etc. against the Knights. Here is my question to the Hornet faithful though… why?
Westfield has ZERO reason to feel like the “little brother” to Deerfield Windsor. Is Deerfield good? Yes. Is Westfield good? Yes! You know what? Westfield is better! So, it’s time for Westfield to wake up and realize that YOU are the STATE CHAMPIONS! Not Deerfield!
Name a quarterback in GISA that is better than Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Is there even a comparison to Westfield’s offensive line with Cam and Deal anchoring the big guys?
Is there a tougher two guys in football than Josh Jenkins and Conner Cawthon?
How about WW#24? It’s like the kid is a magnet and the football is made of metal.
I can’t even get started about Giles Amos. How would you feel guarding a 6’4 beast with hands of glue and the balance of a tight rope walker?
I could go on and on about all these guys. I mean Tucker Moody, Reagan Waller, Tanner Westbrook, John Walker Moore, Walker Davision, Khory Holiday, Cam Forrester, Robert Myatt, Austin Doyle, Griffin Elmore… the list goes on and on and on. It is a dream team of great football players. It is a dream team of great kids too.
I for one cannot wait to get to Marvin Arrington Stadium on Friday night. I want to see that place rocking. I want there to be green and gold everywhere. Be polite to the folks from Albany, but make them realize just how hard of a place the Hornets’ Nest is to play. Give the boys the best home field advantage possible. Get into the heads of the Knights instead of the other way around. Leave no doubt!
So, here is my plea to all you Hornets past and present: BELIEVE! You are Westfield. You are the Champs. Don’t be cocky, be confident. Use the past as fuel to motivate you, don’t let it make you nervous. In the (modified) words of former Georgia Southern football coach Jeff Monken, “News flash! You are Westfield! You are supposed to win this game! Not them! You!”
Let’s do this Hornets! Let’s go for the repeat.
