Let’s see… 3 defensive touchdowns by fumble recovery… Check. 2 special teams touchdowns via a kickoff return and blocked punt… Check. 80 total points in the first half… Check. It was that kind of night at Marvin Arrington Stadium Friday night. Westfield put 75 points on the board on their way to a 75-35 victory over the Dominion Christian Knights in the first round of the GISA AAA State Playoffs.
As per the usual this season for Westfield, they got the scoring going early. Josh Jenkins broke through line from his linebacker position to sack Dominion Christian QB AJ Wilson, and force a fumble in the process. The opportunistic Conner Cawthon was right there to pick up the football for the scoop and score to give Westfield a 7-0 lead before the offense had even stepped on the field.
After forcing a punt on the Knights’ next possession, Westfield’s offense also showed its ability to put points on the board in quick fashion. Ryan Fitzpatrick took the snap and lobbed a fade out to Cam Forrester who came down with the catch, and used an amazing stiff arm to score the 50 yard touchdown. It appeared like the route was on.
Well, in the words of Lee Corso, “Not so fast my friend.” Knights’ QB AJ Wilson showed his abilities to extend plays, and led his team down the field for a touchdown on a 4th and goal pass completion to his TE Caleb Fortney. The craziness of what ensued for the remainder of the first half though had only just begun. Westfield and Dominion Christian traded touchdowns over the next 1:26 of game time to close the first quarter with a score of 27-13 in the favor of the Hornets.
The second quarter was also a scorefest as Westfield put 5 touchdowns on the board, 4 offensive and another defensive TD. Tucker Moody showed his versatility as he personally accounted for 2 of those touchdowns in that quarter by scoring an offensive and defensive TD. The other three TDs came on the ground from Tanner Westbrook, Josh Jenkins, and Jarius Hart. The big second quarter ballooned the lead to 61-19 at halftime.
As would be expected with a big lead at halftime, the clock was running for majority of the third and all of the fourth quarter. Westfield and Dominion Christain each scored two touchdowns in the second half, with DCS adding two 2-point conversions, to arrive at the final score of 75-35.
The win moved Westfield into the second round of the playoffs where they will take on the Brookwood Warriors next Friday night. Brookwood is the #2 seed out of Region 3, and is a solid football team with a remarkable 10-1 record. Last week, Brookwood handily beat Trinity Christian-Dublin 42-16 in their first round playoff matchup. The Warriors also boast a victory over Deerfield-Windsor earlier in the season. Their only loss came to the Region 3 Champs, the Valwood Valiants, on the road.
So, it is safe to say that the Warriors will not be intimated to play in Perry. Westfield fans will need to be out in full force on Friday to give Gang Green a true home field advantage. If you can’t make the game though, just tune into the Brannen Outfitters Pregame Show at 7:10pm, followed by kickoff at 7:30pm only at midgasports.net.
