Despite turning the ball over four times on a rain soaked field in Augusta, the Westfield Hornets dominated the Westminster Wildcats to the tune of 54-14. The win opened region play for the Hornets as they improved their overall record to 5-1.
Westfield opened the game on offense and put together one of their signature drives as they marched down the field and scored on a Josh Jenkins touchdown to quickly go up 7-0. The defense wasn’t to be out done however, as Reagan Waller picked off Westminster QB Josh Woods for the first of his two interceptions on the game. The turnover again led to a Josh Jenkins TD run as Gang Green took a 13-0 lead.
The interception by Reagan Waller became a theme on the night as the Hornets forced five turnovers (three interceptions and two fumbles) by the Wildcats. The defense has now forced 13 turnovers on the season to go along with 12 sacks, including four on Friday night.
While the defense played exceptionally well, the offense had turnover issues of their own. The Hornets turned the ball over four times themselves as Ryan Fitzpatrick and Josh Jenkins had two fumbles each. Two of the turnovers led to 14 points by the Wildcats as RB Nygl Eaddy scored on the very next play for the lone Wildcat touchdowns.
In end however, Westfield wore down Westminster as they overcame their turnover issues in route to a 40 point win. The Hornets were able to get some valuable playing time for their reserves as well, and those reserves responded with great play. RB Jarius Hart in particular played extremely well as he rushed for 93 yards on only 6 carries, and delivered some big hits as he lowered his shoulder into a couple of Wildcat defenders. If Hart can continue the strong play he displayed, he will get more playing time as the season continues.
Westfield’s win moves them to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the region as they head home this Friday to take on the Gatewood Gators. Be sure to tune in to the Brannen Outfitters Pregame Show at 7:10pm followed by kickoff at 7:30pm only at midgasports.net.
