Ever since the loss to the Deerfield-Windsor Knights six weeks ago, the Hornets have been on a tear beating their past five opponents by an average of 38 points per game. Well, Friday night was no different as Westfield made quick work of the Flint River Wildcats in a 55-13 win. The win was also a record setting one for Coach Ronnie Jones. With the win, Coach Jones has now accrued 313 wins in the state of Georgia, ranking him number 10 all-time in the state’s all-time win list (both GHSA and GISA).
The game started out unusually slow for Westfield as they matched three and outs with the Flint River offense on the game’s first three possessions. Once the Hornets got moving though, it didn’t take long for the points to start coming in bunches. In fact, Westfield was able to put 14 points on the board in the span of 38 seconds to lead 14-0 after the first quarter.
The second quarter allowed the Westfield to open the playbook a little bit, as they began to run some shotgun formation. The new offense worked just as well as the traditional Wing T as the Hornets added another 21 points in the 2nd frame to build a 35-6 halftime lead. One of the touchdowns was a 36 yard passing TD to Giles Amos that was significant for the fact that Flint River had not allowed a passing TD in over 25 games.
The second half opened in very odd fashion for Westfield as Flint River decided to try an onside kick to start. Well… it didn’t go too well for the home team. The onside kick bounced right into the hands of Walker Davison, and the big man rumbled down the field for a 30 yard return setting up the Hornets at the Flint River 20 yard line. Just a few plays later, Robert Myatt added his second TD of the night to build the lead to 42-6. The fourth quarter provided little action as the two teams traded touchdowns to wrap up the final score of 55-13.
Next week Westfield finally returns home to the Hornet Nest to take on the Augusta Prep Cavaliers to wrap up the regular season. Tune into the Brannen Outfitters Pregame Show at 7:10pm, followed by kickoff at 7:30pm only at midgasports.net.
