The Westfield Hornets returned home to the Hornet’s Nest on Friday night to play the 500th football game in the history of the school. Looking for their 335th victory in school history, 199th of Ronnie Jones’ storied career at Westfield, but most importantly their 6th of the season, the Hornets put on a show in defeating the Gatewood Gators 49-14.
After opening the game on defense and forcing the Gators into a 3 and out, Ryan Fitzpatrick went to work finding Giles Amos for a lunging 33 yard touchdown to put the Hornets on top 7-0. On the first play of the next drive for Gatewood, RB Palmer Clark fumbled the ball over to Westfield giving them great field possession inside the Gator 20 yard line. The Hornets took advantage of the great field position and punched in a touchdown from 8 yards out by Tanner Westbrook. Westfield would continue to add to their lead as they were up 21-7 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was more of the same for the home team, as they added a pair of touchdown runs from Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tanner Westbrook to go along with a defensive touchdown from Cam Forrester. Cam’s pick 6 was a thing of beauty as he stepped in front of a swing pass and returned it for a 36 yard touchdown. The 21 point 2nd quarter gave the Hornets a 42-7 lead at halftime.
The second half was just a necessity at that point, as both teams played vanilla offense in trying to just run out the clock and protect players from injury. Each team scored a second half touchdown that led to the final score of 49-14.
Next week the Westfield Hornets will go on the road to face John Milledge Academy for what will be the de facto Region 4-AAA Championship Game. JMA is a tough squad that will throw the ball all over the field much like Valwood. It will be a busy night for the “Swat Squad” in the secondary, but with their tendency to come up with the interception, it could be fun.
