After three consecutive games in which Westfield dominated their competition, the Hornets were looking forward to taking on a formidable opponent in the John Milledge Academy Trojans. As the game ended however, the scoreboard looked much the same as it had in the weeks before. The Hornets went into the Milledgeville and put on a clinic, playing their most complete game of the season in route to a 49-14 win over the Trojans. The win clinched the Region 4 championship for the Westfield Hornets with two weeks still remaining in the regular season.
John Milledge realized early on that if you are going to beat the defending state champions, you are going to have to take some gambles. The first gamble by Coach JT Wall came on the very first possession of the game as he sent his Trojans out to go for it on a 4th down and 2 from their own 30 yard line. Trojan RB Cody Miller took the handoff and tried to lunge ahead to the sticks, but was stopped by the Gang Green defense. The turnover on downs gave the Hornets great field position at the Trojan 30 yard line. Just 5 plays later, the Hornets took the lead after a 4 yard TD run by Tanner Westbrook.
The defense wasn’t done impressing for Coach Jones’ crew, as this time Tucker Moody came up with an interception and returned 48 yards for a Westfield touchdown. Quickly the Hornets were up on the undefeated Trojans 14-0, and the large home crowd was now silent. The only cheering that could be heard at Ted S. Smith Stadium was that of the Hornet faithful as they built a 35-7 lead at halftime.
The second half was more of the same for Westfield as the outscored the Trojans 14-7 to bring the total to 49-14 as the game ended. The game was impressive for the Hornets as it was probably the most complete game they have played in all facets. The defense forced three turnovers, had four sacks, and scored a touchdown. The offense four rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns. They even scored on a trick play that saw Gavin Edmondson take a throwback screen and launch a perfect 38 yard touchdown pass to Reagan Waller. All in all, it was a special night for Coach Jones as he earned his 200th career victory at Westfield.
Westfield will step out of region play to take on Flint River this coming Friday up in Woodbury. Look for the Hornets to continue their dominating efforts against an overmatched Flint River squad.
