My excitement turned to disappointment when I found out Coach Monken decided to leave for Army. While I can't fault a man for taking a job that pays more and I guess is a step up (maybe?), but it couldn't have come at a worse time for the Eagles. Here we are all set ready to move up to the Sunbelt, with a stadium expansion in the process and donation fees increasing, and our leader decides to abandon ship? So much for the whole idea of "Join the Journey". I guess Coach Monken's journey was to go to West Point, NY.
So, here we sit about a month away for National Signing Day in arguably our most important time for recruiting and we don't have a head coach. So what do we do now? I'll take a look at some of the rumored candidates and give you my take on each.
1. Mike Bobo
Well, the guy has a big name and is the OC at UGA. Other than that, no thanks. Most UGA fans can't stand the way he calls an offense, and what the heck would he do down at GSU with current personnel we have? We don't have 5 star recruits at every position, and certainly don't have the personnel to run a pro style offense. Odds of being the GSU coach in my opinion = 10%
2. Brent Pry
Now here is a name I like. Pry was an excellent defensive coordinator at GSU in 2010 and made a defense that looked pedestrian in 2009 turn into a top 20 defense nationally. He is a firey guy loves to bring pressure, and I personally would love to see him back in the Boro. The only drawback with Pry though would be who he planned to bring in as an OC. If he could find someone to run either the flexbone or spread option, I would be ecstatic for him as the GSU head coach. Odds of being the GSU coach in my opinion = 50%
3. Willie Fritz
Here is guy that I did not know a lot about in all honesty, but the more I read about him the more I like him. He has had great success at Sam Houston State, and he runs an offense that I think would be an easy transition for GSU. The spread offense is the way of college football now, and GSU has the current personnel that they could easily run it with no problems. As each day wears on and no one is hired, I am thinking that Coach Fritz might be the choice. Odds of being GSU coach in my opinion = 60%.
I guess we will find out who the pick is in a couple of days. Whoever it is though will have a lot of weight on their shoulders, and hopefully they will be ready...
